I had BV several years ago. It took several treatments but it did go away. Mine was a rare case. It is very important to take all medication as directed and finish it while abstaining from sex until you are sure the infection is gone. It is nothing to be embarrassed about. I believe I got mine from taking strong antibiotics for an extended amount of time for a staph infection. Now I take a probiotic with all antibiotics to prevent BV and yeast infections. I don't wear tampons, only use dove soap, dye and perfume free laundry soap etc. just some tips to follow to prevent it occurring again. It is a bacterial infection and with medication and treatment will go away.
Dont be embarrassed! The vagina is a body part that can get infection as easily as your throat, your ears, your sinuses etc. You dont get embarrassed when you get a sinus infection, do you? There is no difference. Sometimes you can get imbalances in bacterial flora in the vagina which lead to infection. The vagina has both beneficial bacteria and bad bacteria. Usually they stay in balance so one doesnt overpower the other but if there gets to be a change in pH, or what have you, or an antibiotic kills off good bacteria and allows the bad ones to flourish then we get infection. It is nothing you did and nothing to be embarrassed by. Do NOT douche however, if you use vaginal douches, STOP! This is one of the major causes of imbalance in the vagina. It changes the pH and kills off beneficial bacteria. The vagina is a "self cleansing" organ and in spite of wives tales and popular belief, doesnt need "Summer Breezes".
Metronidazole is good at killing off anaerobic bacteria and protozoans. Did you happen to ask if your infection was a sexually transmitted one? Sometimes men can be carriers for years without symptoms but if he carries the infection in his urethra (the tube in his penis that leads to the bladder) or prostate, he can keep passing it back and forth during sex. He may have gotten infected years ago by a sexual partner. It doesnt mean he has cheated. These can lie dormant for a while too. Be sure that you finish the entire course of the medication. Metronidazole can have some unpleasant side effects. Avoid ANYTHING with alcohol in it. It will make you violently ill if you use alcohol while on this medicine. Finish all of it even if you feel better.
