- infections, pain, metronidazole, oral and dental conditions, toothache
Had bad toothache over the weekend, need root canal and been prescribed it today, for 5 days. Heard you cannot drink during or for 48 hours afterwards, which is a pain because i am going on holiday on Thursday until Monday. Any realistic advice on if you cut your course short and what the effects are likely to be?
Thinking of stopping on Thursday so i can start drinking Friday.
Not a good idea. You should finish the course of antibiotics - unless of course you want the infection (and pain) to return.
If you mix alcohol with metronidazole you will feel hideous - and definitely not worth it.
The only realistic piece of advice I could give you is to not start treatment until after the weekend and dose yourself up on pain killers... or take the medicine as directed and not drink any alcohol for 2 days once finished. All the best in what ever you decide to do... not a great situation to be in!
Hey Kev - If you want to clear up the infection, follow the directions. There is NO SHORT CUT! You can have a fine holiday without thinking about drinking. If that is what you plan on doing... don't fill the script and save that money. But, it will get worse while you are on holiday and no amount of booze is going to numb it. You know you need a root canal already so there is no way around this. You wanted a realistic answer with advice and this is it. I didn't say you would like it but I think you already know what you need to do. Start it today and get it over with. Waiting could cause other issues that you hadn't thought about like developing an infection in your sinuses and then there won't be any fun to have for many weeks on top of that. So, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday... no drinking on Saturday or Sunday (or during the course of treatment). Enjoy your holiday and just remember that you had one... drinking tends to make you forget lots of things like the good, the bad and the truly ugly.
Why do people think that holiday and drink have to go hand in hand? Dental infections can become sinus infections, and then brain infections. That would be fun on a holiday wouldn't it?
