I started having irregular heart beats after taking this drug for aprox. 8 months which progressively got worse. After stopping metoprolo under doctors orders I developed pacs & pvcs. My cardiologist started me back on it 50mg.twice a day. Side effects of muscle pain & weakness fatigue were too bad & he told me to wean myself off of it. Pacs & pvcs came back. Are there other options to control the irregular heartrate?
You've got some underlying pathology that you were put on the metoprolol to start with? There are other beta blockers that would help but not like metoprolol should. I was on nadolol for years until they more then doubled the price and it worked well. I went on metoprolol after that.
I take Metoprolol twice a day, along with 8 other BP meds. At first I was barely able to function. But I took them because I wanted to live, and had just had a major heart event. I was in cardiac intensive care, and it took several tries and combinations of different drugs on IV to get me to the point of keeping my BP down. When I was released from the hospital I was on about 14 different pills just for my BP. But part of the process is getting through the initial phase of fatigue, lightheadedness, sometimes to the point of fainting when I stood up. I was absolutely unable to function, but eventually my body started to adjust, and I started to come back. I'm doing much better now.
Kaismama is correct that you must have some underlying condition which is the reason you were put on Metoprolol to begin with. You need to work with your doctor. You also need to accept that at first you aren't going to feel well, you will be fatigued. It won't last forever. Talk to your doctor about this!
Coreg is another beta blocker that does similar to Metoprolol although it is slow going to get on it as it affects the BP pretty hard, talk to your doctor about it, perhaps it will work for you, but will tell you that all of the meds for pvc's and pac's have similar side effects, it's just finding the one that does the job with the least side effects.
