My doctor says there is a Federal Regulation that only allows him to prescribe up to 90 mg of Methadone for a chronic pain patient. Has anyone else encountered this?
Since you are prescribed methadone for chronic pain, the excerpt below may or may not apply to you. However, your doc CAN legally prescribe a higher dose than what you currently take. I hope you get your pain under control soon!
For Maintenance Treatment:
Patients in maintenance treatment should be titrated to a dose at which opioid symptoms are prevented for 24 hours, drug hunger or craving is reduced, the euphoric effects of self-administered opioids are blocked or attenuated, and the patient is tolerant to the sedative effects of methadone. Most commonly, clinical stability is achieved at doses between 80 to 120 mg/day.
hi EJ,that fed reg your doctor is talking about may be either an old guideline set for maintenance. cause i know people on methadone who take 200mg daily but take 100mg 2x a day. Some take it 3x a day, that is how most pain management doctors prescrib it.you can ask a pharmacist that carries methadone.
I am going to follow your question. Hope we get some good answers. I couldn't find a dr. to prescribe it for for my chronic pain so I started out of desperation a clinic. I am up to 90mg. But as I understand for pain control you need that amount every 6 hours, that's when the analgesic effect wears off which is truer with me.
Now I am stuck going to a clinic daily which is an hour away and don't have sufficient pain relief. I don't know what to do, I am literally losing my mind from the pain and my health. I was hosptalized last week and today my visiting nurse took my hp and pulse. BP was 68/40 and pulse was 121, not good, I will be going back in after I see my pcp Wednesday.
How did you get methadone from a physician. Even the pain dr I had at the time said he doesn't prescribe it. My psych dr or pcp won't either.
Let me know and Good Luck and God Bless to you. Sable
Years ago, the stigma attached to 'taking methadone' was SO negative, that nobody would admit to using it for chronic pain relief. I found it, personally, a BLESSING. My liver panels were off the charts from all the Tylenol involved in other pain meds, e.g., Vicodin, Lortab, etc. I managed to level off the Methadone to 40mg. a day, prn for pain. I just dont want to be TOO DEEPLY dependent on it, if something happens to my doctor. Most of the time, when a celeb dies from O.D. the Gov't or DEA cracks down on the good doctors that use it for palliative, incurable, chronic pain relief.
After being on it since 2002, I dont find any 'ill efx' ... except the worrying about NOT getting it each month. I find that 120 of the 10mg. is plenty. However I have met people with cirrhosis of the liver, neuropathy & intractable pain who get 300 per month!! any comments or comparisons, please chime in. thanks.
