Mirena has to be replaced after 5 years because it depletes the hormones that it secretes to prevent pregnancy. Once it stops secreting hormones, you could become pregnant and the pregnancy can be complicated because of the device in the uterus. Usually the device has to be removed and this can possibly terminate the pregnancy. It is very important to have t replaced if you want to continue to use it for birth control. If you leave it in beyond five years and use an alternative birth control, like condoms, the device being left in can cause a pelvic infection and this could scar the uterine lining making a woman barren. It needs to be removed and replaced or removed and an alternate method used. Either way the device should be taken out!
