many of my husband's memories have been altered and he believes that I'm trying to harm him. simple things confuse him and when I try to explain things he gets very angry and refuses to discuss it further.
I'm sorry to say that the physical damage is not reversible. The cause, I believe, is high blood ammonia levels which can be reduced initially by the regular use of an osmotic laxative: Lactulose. They later use peritoneal dialysis (they fill the abdominal cavity with a specially prepared ultra sterile solution that osmotically extracts ammonia from the blood and then some hours later drain that fluid off).
If I were in your shoes I would go to see the doctor privately and ask for advice on how best to manage his behaviour (mild tranquilizers or something??). Lowering your husbands blood ammonia levels might make him more lucid or amenable to co-operating with you to get this issue managed. (a word of warning; Lactulose alters your abdominal pH levels making your lower GI tract acidic which can lead to some pretty urgent situations (60 seconds type urgency). It took me about 6 months before I had it worked out so I knew when to take it to avoid nasty situations. Fortunately for me, I discovered the encephalopathy issue very early and have been able thus far to halt it's progression. My doctor actually commented on my markedly improved cognitive function after about 3 months of using Lactulose. That does not mean the damage incurred is cured; it indicates consistently lower blood ammonia levels and the loss of the foggy brain effect.
I feel terrible for you in this situation as he probably lacks insight into his behaviour.
Bless you, Steve.
