I will be having a total knee replacment in the near furture. My concern is that since the menopause, I have developed a benign arrythmia. I am wondering if the meds used for the spinal, the sedation as well as for pain control will affect the arrythmia? Thank you

Hi lady j, Do you know what they call the arrhythmia you have? Something Atrial Fibrillation. I am sure, or make sure the surgeon, or more importantly The anesthesiologist Know your condition. You may want your cardiologist to consult them both before surgery. Surgery is done all the time on people with certain arrhythmia. If you know drop a line Dave

Hi David and thanks for your reply..The arrythmia I have is called ventricular dysrythmia and is totally not diagnosis but a real annoyance. I hate when I get them because it brings on anxiety and a terrible feeling in my chest.. Yes, I will speak to the anesthesiologist for sure. I was hoping that someone else might have gone through this and could ease my worries. Thanks again
Hi jane Dave here again. Ventricular Dysrythmia is a condition where the right Ventricle beats before it has filled with blood. That's what you feel as palpitations or flutters in your chest. It has to do with the nerves (sinus node)that make your heart beat.(They are called PVC's) premature ventricular contractions. An occasional PVC usually do not pose a danger. There is treatment for them, if necessary. Ranging from beta blockers. Maintaining a balance of magnesium, calcium & potassium. To radiofrequency Ablation of the offending nerve inside the heart. Ablation should be the last resort. If you have not been to see a cardiologist you need to before surgery. Every one needs to be aware of your PVC's awhile before surgery, NOT the day of surgery. Stay away from stimulants, coffee etc. although PVS's are usually a benign condition, they can pose a problem. I know you want a clear no problem answer but ti needs to be worked up with a cardiologist. You will do fine! Let us know how you are doing OK Dave
Hi Dave and thanks for your detailed reply. I have been to see a cardiologist already. I had a holter monitor done this summer at which time I had a over 2,500 ectopic beats and my heart beat ranged from 38-150. During all of this I maintained normal sinus rythum. My blood pressure is normal. The cardiologist told me that in my case this was a nuisance and not diagnostic of any heart problem. He also told me I could not take beta blockers because my resting heart rate is too low. ( he figures it's the parasympathetic and sympathetic system out of wack due to the menopause) All other tests were ok.He also told me to stay clear of simulants. I guess my question really should be are any of the meds used during this operation considered a stimulant.? Thanks so much.
Hi jane, I miss spoke in my last answer, I said right ventricle. It is the Left ventricle that is not filling on that extra beat. LV contracts and sends out blood the body. Dave
Hi again, I didn't see your last post. There are no stimulant drugs usually used in Knee surgery. They may use epinephrin if there is a problem, that is rare. I am so glad to see you have a good cardiologist he sems to have every thing under control. Don't worry you will do great. You will be in my prayers> Dave
