I was prescribed this medication today because I have ovarian cysts and haven't had a cycle in 51 days. I went to my gyno today and not only do I have the cysts but apparently I have a stuck corpus luteum on my left ovary. Will this medication work? I'm miserable. I have all the symtoms of a period but no period.
An ovarian cyst is a sac or pouch that develops in or on the ovary. The cysts may contain liquid, or solid material or a combination of both. From what you describe you have a Corpus Luteum Cyst - this cyst is caused by a malfunction of the corpus luteum. Unless a woman is pregnant, the corpus luteum disintegrates but in the formation of a corpus luteum cyst, it fills with fluid and remains in the ovary.
While medroxyprogesterone is not a usual treatment for ovarian cysts, it is given to induce a period in patients who have skipped a period or have irregular periods, or to diagnose an abnormality (progesterone challenge test). Medroxyprogesterone is given daily for 5 to 10 days and then stopped. It is hoped that this will induce a period within 2 weeks of stopping. The result of this test will help your doctor decide what needs to happen next. All the best.
