... to extreme anxiety disorder. Im not on any SSRI due to side effects to strong for me. But now i feel that the medication is no longer working for me. i have been dealing with my anxiety with therapy and it has been helpful. I wish to taper off of this but scared because ive herd horror stories about coming off this drug. I wish to start a family soon too. Is the dose high to have complications to taper off?
I would not just stop at 1 mg, but taper down to .25mgs or one fourth of a 1mg pill. Cut your 1mg pills into four pieces and reduce to 3/4's of a pill for 2 weeks, then drop to 1/2 a pill for 2 weeks, then to 1/4 for two weeks then 1/4 every other day for a week, then stop. A slow taper such as this will keep you from having any withdrawal. This is how I did it and had no problems.
Tapering is the same as taking, what I mean is the prescribing physician needs to be involved so you can be put on a schedule that will cause you the least discomfort, if any, The horror stories come from folks who play Dr and just do it as they think, I know, I was one of them. Always go with the Doc's instructions for best results.
I started at 1mg and stopped abruptly because I didn't know any better. I was on it for about 9 months at the time. Crazy withdrawal set in two days later and I was instructed to go back on the 1mg. I then reduced to .5mg at night for about two months then down to .25mg for two months. I've been at .125 for about a month and have only had insomnia which I hope will just work itself out. My doctor prescribed the .5 mg tablets which I cut in quarters with a pill cutter. I stopped totally two days ago and am really nervous about more withdrawal symptoms. I have only been sleeping about three hours a night. Benedryl doesn't work. I resorted to a .5 ambien last night but only got three hours of sleep. Trying melatonin tonight. My only advice is to slow taper and don't rush things. I have read that quick tapers cause withdrawal which lasts much longer. Slow and steady. Good Luck!
