I have had trouble sleeping for as long as I can remember. My doctor put me on 5mg Ambien for 2 weeks. I slept great! At my insistence, my doctor let me stay on the Ambien long term. I have been on it for nearly 2 months now. Over the past couple of months, I have developed dizzy spells..more lightheaded than vertigo. I feel really stoned. These spells usually last a couple hours and go away. I had one of these episodes set in nearly a week ago, and it has continued unabated. Could it be the ambien? Is it plausible that it takes 2 months for symptoms to fully appear? I only take the prescribed amount. No history of abuse. How long would it take to get it completely out of my system? I don't like feeling this way.
Best to tell the Dr about this and get his/her recommendation for reducing it, I'd say 2-3 weeks before it completely out. Ambien was originaly designed to just help you fall asleep, not keep you asleep. Habe you researched the many non-med related things you can do to help you sleep better? There are nutritional aspects, habits, light exercise, power naps, before bed rituals, waking time, etc.etc.
I had the same problems with this med after 2-3 months on it, got off it slowly and looked into all the options I mentioned, Now, while I still wake up a few times, I do get a solid few hours between the brief awakenings. A few (3-4) solid hours is sometimes all we need for night sleep.
The body is a well tuned machine, there's so much we can do to help it self sooth without meds.
