a individual was prescribed both lortabs for pain (120) and 30 xanax bars. is there a problem with over medicating or addiction?
Absolutely there is a great chance for addiction especially with the xanax. Xanax is a short acting benzodiazapine and is usually used or is supposed to be used for acute cases and not chronically. If you have to use this drug daily for more than a few weeks then you are asking for trouble.
Loratab is a relatively weak opiate with a high abuse rate mainly because it is readily available. It is used for mild to medium pain and used for acute issues.
So all in all if you use these meds they should not be used chronically. If the patient needs chronic care then they should be sustained release opiates and benzo's...
One other thing, if this patient is not used to taking either of these drugs then make sure someone is around especially at night as the 2 drugs combined can cause respitory failure. If you here heavy snoring or interupted snoring or breathing then call 911 right away... Dave
