I have an extremely hard time falling asleep every night. I can lay in bed for hours trying before I have to take nyquil and even that doesn't work half of the time. When I do sleep, I can sleep for hours on hours on hours. When I don't have to wake up in the morning for work, I usually sleep for 12 or more hours on average. The worst part is that even though I sleep way more than other people, I STILL wake up tired. No matter what, if I sleep for 5 hours or 12, I still wake up tired. I hate waking up because I'm always so freaking tired, which prompts me to be late very frequently and even miss work so I can sleep in.
spooky; I really think you should see a doctor about this, Somehow you have to get into a balance of good sleep, And where you feel rested at the time you wake up. It's like your clock is messed up.But I really feel this is going to take the help of your doctor, And Nyquil is not the best idea too often you could first go to your Pharmacy and see what the Pharmacist say. Almost all of the sleep aids OTC over the counter. the key Ingredient is Diphenhydramine or better know as generic Benadryl. I would rather have you take that than all the extra junk that is in Nyquil. If that does not work please see your Doctor. Chuck1957
I agree with Chuck about seeing a doctor. If you can, get a full medical check up with lab work. There are too many variables that could be the cause of your sleep issues. Better to rule these out then to self medicate and or loose your job.

I have had trouble with sleep all my life. I totally understand why you said you use Nyquil. Even with prescription sleep medication, I still have to use Nyquil if there's a reason I have to go to sleep in order to be somewhere in the morning. But I've been taking two 3 mg Melatonin and I stopped "trying" to get to sleep, even trying to stay awake and I usually can get to sleep if I don't try to. I try to stay awake by setting a goal of watching a whole movie or a certain amount of chapters or pages of a good book and I rarely make it to my goal before falling asleep. But I usually only sleep about 3 hours and I feel most alert with around 6 hours. I wish I could be of more help but I can mostly just relate to the problem.
