I am told that a 1% solution is approved for the prevention of opthalmia neonatorum.
When I was working in the nursery years ago, it was put in the eyes of every newborn, specifically because it killed the bacteria that causes gonorrhea, and they just didn't take any chances. It is no longer available in the united states. Probably because there are better antibiotic eye drops.
