I take 150mg of amitriptyline and have taken it for nearly 13 years. I am 21 and suffer terrible headaches as I had meningococcal encephalitis. It isn't working anymore and I can no longer keep increasing the dosage so need to change medication. I was just wondering how long it would take to come off it before I could take a new medication. The dosage doesn't make me sleepy at all probably because I am so used to it. Thank you for helping!
I would strongly suggest contacting your doctor before making any changes. I was on this medication (25 mg) for only a couple of years and I started building up a tolerance and it just no longer worked for me. I too suffer from migraines and have Arnold-Chiari malformation. I take a beta blocker as well. Anyway, I tried weaning off the medication over a two week time span and all of a sudden started getting heart palpitations/anxiety attacks that I had never had before. They were strong enough to scare me. I am 44 and stay healthy too. After seeing a cardiologist etc. the doctor seems to think it was a side effect of stopping the medication. Amitriptyline is very sedating and after a time we just don't notice how it effects us until we stop. I am feeling better now, but it took a couple of months after stopping to get through some of the unpleasant effects. Good luck.
