Hi, you can take Tramadol long term, many people do. And it can continue being just as effective. I took it for years after having it prescribed for a back injury also. The only thing i would say, is that you can build a dependence, causing you to want to increase your dosage. It can also be very difficult to discontinue use if/when you decide to stop taking them. I am one of those people who had difficulties with addiction. However, this doesn't apply to everyone, just a warning.
Delila gave you great info. I want to add one more thing, do not ever abuse Tramadol or Ultram because your seizure threshold is lowered significantly when high doses are taken.
Other than that, just listen to Delila, she would never steer you wrong.
I'm very happy that, especially at 50mph, that you didn't wind up paralyzed too!
Someone was watching out for you that day. You must have great things to do in your life, for you were spared for a reason.
