My son and daughter will be staying in Malawi for 3 months. There is some doubt as to whether it is safe to take malarone for this length of time. Does anyone know if it is best to take another medication?
This is one of those that taking it can be worrisome but not taking it can allow serious illness. The other meds used for both malaria prophylaxis and malaria also have some nasty side effects, and in some areas of the world aren't even effective anymore. 3 months isn't long term. Long term is years. When you make the decision if they should take it, look up malaria and see if you'd rather they had that. It will help you decide. When I was in the army, the guys were supposed to take a preventive med weekly. It gave them diarrhea so they skipped taking it. When they had a malaria bout, they would say if only I'd taken it.
