Hi, I'm 24 & suffer badly from bipolar 1 disorder, my phycyatrist has struggled to get the right medication for me & is now trying me on lithium & olanzapine (10mgs) starting this evening (12/04/16) in was told to take it early as possible as it has a horrible sleepy side affect & I need to be up to get my 5 year old to school in the morning. I took my medication around 8.30pm & I'm still wide awake & buzzing (going through a mania) I understand that olanzapine is a sedative, surely I should be sound asleep by now? How long should it normally take?
Hi, I am bipolar too, and also take olanzapine,. Yes , this med is used to treat insomnia and as you know schizophrenia and BPD.
I take it @ night, and for me it works right away and fall as sleep, but I also suffer from insomnia and olanzapine works right away with regards to putting me to sleep, but I only sleep 3 hrs. and take more meds, I take 300mg of seroquel (quetiapine), 150mg of lyrica (pregabalin),10mg of zyprexa (olanzapine) and 2 mg of Klonopin (clonazepam)
Now regarding helping your BPD you notice a change (@ least I did, we all react differently to meds) but it is hard to described one becomes more balanced in time.
Now if you really need a strong sedative hypnotic ask your Dr. about seroquel, that will put anyone to sleep depending on the dose, they usually start with 25mg. and gradually begin to increase the dose depending on the patient´s reaction to the med.
I almost forgot, you were advice to take the medication as early as possible, and when I am not in a manic stage, (been manic for 3 months now) I take around 8:00pm when I am "normal" I get 12 hrs. of great sleep.
All the best... masso.-
