I am on Butrans now for 16 months and although effective it is not as effective as a year ago. Does full tolerance develop or can Butrans be used for years?
Butrans® skin patches contain buprenorphine, a potent opioid pain medicine, used for the management of pain severe enough to require daily, around-the-clock, pain relief for which alternative treatment options are inadequate. Butrans is no different to other opioids in that the user is exposed to the risk of tolerance, dependance and addiction.
Tolerance is when you need to take a higher dose to achieve the same pain relief as before. Every person responds differently but it is not entirely impossible that at some stage with continued high doses you may not get effective relief. You should talk with your doctor about any concerns you may have.
