This does happen on occasion but it is usually due to improper usage of the Pill like not using back up when appropriate and missing pills or not using back up when one is on antibiotics. Birth control hormones wont harm the fetus if you do get pregnant but, of course, you would want to stop them as soon as you knew for sure that you were pregnant. If you take your pill properly, the risk for unplanned pregnancy is very very small, less than 1% if you take them perfectly, more average use is 96 to 98% effective which means chance for pregnancy is 2-4%.
