I have been taking care of my husband since Feb. 2014, when we found out that he has Cirrhosis. What are the stages of Cirrhosis? Our doctor sent in his paperwork to see if he qualifies for a transplant, how does that work and what are the chances he will qualify if he has had pancreatitis?
The committees that decide this look at many things. Age, basic physical condition, is he drinking, and that' s just to get on the list, then he has to wait for a donor match. Now if someone says I want to give part of my liver to so and so, then its a whole different thing, then the questions is do they match and will he survive the surgery, the stages can be found here... livestrong.com/article/240024-what-are-the-4-stages-of-cirrhosis/
My husband was on the liver transplant list at the University of Pennsylvania, we had to meet the transplant team there are many things that you have to follow, absolutely no drinking he has to go for blood work once a week they check what is called the meld score. It is a very over welming at times. No matter what your husband goes through just be there for him. It's not easy. There are support groups for you and people who you (wife) can turn and talk to.
my brother went through this process for liver transplant. I just want to share what i learned that i wish i knew before. He was just going to a regular GI doctor for the first 6 months or so. Then we learned that at our particular transplant center--Piedmont-- that 6 months of alcoholic counseling was required just to get your name on the list. We should have started out straight off with this counseling, so we could make sure that he would have enough time to get the counseling in. He pleaded with the doctors, and they gave some leniency about the time. He has had a successful transplant, and he is having a good recovery too. There are lots of hoops to jump through including a complete a complete medical workup. Just make sure you go straight to the transplant center and learn all the requirement from the beginning. Hope this helps. you can ask me a question, and i'll try to answer.
