... The docs are not quite sure how she got cirrhosis except for fatty liver disease and they nicked her liver years ago when she had surgery for something else. She is taking care of herself and doing all she can to keep on going. Her Meld # is 8. Can someone tell me what this all means? I've looked up info and know the basics; I just don't know what that Meld # means nor how long I should expect her life to be. Very confused
To start with MELD is an acronym; Mayo End stage Liver Disease. A MELD score of 8 when you just have non alcoholic liver disease is a bit high. The problem with MELD scores is that they are a measure of probabilities.
A change of diet with not more than 15% of calories derived from fat on a fairly standard 2000 calorie a day diet and her MELD will probably fall. As an example I got mine down from 22 to 12 with diet alone and am expected to live another 5 to 10 years (but that is actually something like 80% chance of 5 years and a 10% chance of 10. No Macca's, no deep fried food is a good start. If you have more specific questions I'll do my best.
If you are eligible for a transplant you (your Liver doctor) registers you when your MELD gets to 14 (in AU) and they do all the tissue type matching, testing; the works. It's about a week of tests in hospital.
