I have been on lithium for 11 years , the only bad side effect was gaining weight. I never experienced any other bad side effect, when I stopped taking my medicine all together for 6 months, which included lithium, I guess I didnt feel anything bad with my bipolar side effects because I was self medicating.
Sorry to hear about the weight gain. When I was on it, I didn't experience that side effect. That being said, I couldn't stay on it too long as I became toxic. So to answer your question, no it didn't work for me. However, it is the number one med to help with depression.
Self medicating is not the answer to the problem. I've done it for many years and when I got my life back on track I seen how worse it had affected my illness.
Can you see your pdoc to see if he/she can prescribe something else?
I stay about 1/2 way down towards the lowest point of depression with lithium. However, I have a kind of energy that I've never had when the depression is this bad. I can use this energy to make myself do things that ultimately pick me up. I have to be sociable to keep the depression at bay.
Also on lamictal and cymbalta. Doctor tried removing the cymbalta and I sunk way down to the bottom and could hardly move... Human brains are so complex and messed up these days. lol
I think this is the best it can get for me as all drugs have stopped working and I've had 7 ECT treatments.
