Definite cognitive function deficits of insidious onset over the last 2 years and ADL impairments in keeping with Dementia syndrome. In 63 yr old Bipolar patient on Lithium for about 11yrs. CT scan showed small cerebral vessel disease. The other cardiovascular risk factors is Hypertension. Cognitive symptoms are not fluctuating and the progression is steady. Am unable to make a definite call of what subtype of Dementia this could be.
Kinkana; I really do not see where the Lithium would affect this problem but I think you should get her back into the doctor make sure you have a list of all her other medications And hope they can rule out any Interaction. That might be causing this. But I would try and get her in as soon as possible if that is hard call the doctor and give the doctor the things you are seeing because it could ever be a dose change Good luck wish I could be of more help have a good day. Chuck is right. The lithium might actually be helpful. It’s usually the antipsychotics that are bad for people with dementia. One thought I had is to make sure she’s regularly getting blood tests for her lithium content. She might not be in a state to notice if something were to feel wrong about her lithium levels.
