I have been diagnosed with GAD for about 7 years. I took celexa for about five years and decided I wanted to try not taking meds. I have been off celexa for almost two years and how am having terrible panic attacks so my NP told me to get back on celexa. Tried the celexa again but it caused me to have shallow breathing which I have been told it made me have a panic attack. So now I've been prescribed lexapro. I already have shallow breathing due to my heightened anxiety and am worried the lexapro will make this symptom worse. Is there anyone who experienced shallow breathing and was it helped by lexapro?
merec08; yes this is a good medication for GAD and your problem of shallow breathing. I used to suffer from this alot which would bring on the panic attack, But I also took a class on helping with panic attacks which many are started by our own reaction to different things and many of us start the shallow breathing on our own. Like as soon as we fell a bit strange go into that mode what i learned was to put a plate the small one on my stomach and breath deep and slow while raising the plate so you can see it which means you are breathing deep the thing to remember is it's the medication and you learning tricks that nobody can tell your even doing it.So as soon as I start to feel the anxiety or panic increase I start the deep breathing in the store or where ever and it gets me back in control fast just remember do it slow in and out the fast breathing and shallow breathing is what starts hyperventilating Hope this helps you as much as it has me. Take the Lexapro it has a good record for giving you relief. Have a great day..Chuck1957
merec08; Just a reminder its best no matter what when you get the right medications and they are working don't worry about going off of them most of us with these chronic problems it is for life or at least a long time and forget that it is the medication that is keeping us under control. You just have to look at it like any other medication like for blood pressure or diabetes you would not stop those And these meds for our mental health are just as importaint. Chuck1957
