... relationship from the age of 14 till 19. Once it was over I became experiencing overwhelming depression along with anxiety. I've tried for a long time to change my life style through diet and exercise hoping that would help, but I feel like I need to speak with a doctor about antidepressants. I'm not even sure to contact my family doctor or speak with a therapist. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!
Dear Bjk, BRAVO to you for recognizing a problem and thinking about seeking help! Why live like this? You could begin with your family physician or, if that's an uncomfortable situation, look for a mental health clinic in your local yellow pages.
Be honest and direct about your feelings and how it's affecting your life. Medications are not a magic bullet but you've already taken great steps in caring for yourself. The doctor may recommend therapy to explore the abuse and your residual feelings of anger, resentment, and guilt.
Feel free to post here anytime with questions and concerns you may have along the way. Everyone here will be happy to share their personal experiences and give you support through your journey.
Good luck and best wishes to you, Wildcat
I am sorry that you had to endure abuse at such a young age.
Diet and exercise can help. A therapist may be able to lead you to understanding your symptoms. You may be suffering from PTSD that can come on after a traumatic situation. You endured abuse over a long period of time. It can be a win-win situation if you have a doctor and therapist working with you. You are a strong person to be in college and trying to change your life for the better :)
