My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD at 8 years old and was on aderall which we had to change due to appitite drop and depression. she has been on concerta until this week. Our PCP just changed her concerta to vyvance. she was having headaches and moody so her Dr. prescribed Lamotragine, but she was never diagnosed with bipolar disorder just ADHD and Impulse disorder. is this a new name for bipolar? Should I be concerned?
I was put on it by a rheumatologist who said he'd found that it helped in fibro. I don't have a diagnosis of BPD. I found that I did feel good on it, and it stabilizes mood somewhat. The only warning I would give is read all the info that comes with the medication, from the pharmacy, and follow dosing instructions exactly.
Headache and irritability are side effects of both Concerta and Vyvanse plus she is probably beginning to go into very early puberty in which moodiness is just par for the course. Why did he change her from Concerta to Vyvanse? Is he a psychiatrist or is he a pediatrician? I'm not a big fan of primary care/family doctors and pediatricians treating ADHD. I think it should be done by a psychiatrist but if you are comfortable with this Dr, it is your choice. It seems to me like he wants to throw a drug at her for every little symptom rather than find the cause of the problems. Is the moodiness severe? If she is severely moody and you just cant deal with it then you might try the lamotrigine but if it is mild dont give that stuff to her! It sounds more to me like they need to tweak her stimulant dose or find something that doesnt give her headaches and makes her moody. You might want to gain a second opinion.
I've been taking Lamotrigine (Lamictal) for over 5 yrs now with Ritalin or other ADHD drugs, I asked the doctor why, they say its a mood stabilizer, they said it is not necessarily a bi polar drug, it does help my mood, I can notice that about 1 hr. after taking. I haven't had any problems taking this med, I did not get the rash which is mentioned when you start taking it. I was also misdiagnosed as bi polar, IMO the Drs are assuming ADHD symptoms are bi polar. I was first dx as bi polar & given Lithium, I felt like I was living in a box, I was not getting enough sleep, I was nothing like myself, just bland (if that makes any sense), i am 60 yrs old and only dx with ADHD at 47.
