I tend to have more mania than depression,I'm currently on risperdal but after making me go frm 125 to 140 I would like to find another medication I'm also on celexa and still feel slightly off, want to see if this is a medication to consider, thank you
Hi, Mortisha! Lamictal is an excellent medication for Bipolar mania although it it is not a mood stabilizer like lithium but rather an anticonvulsant. Beware of using antidepressants in the treatment of Bipolar ~ they can provoke hypo/hypermanic episodes and their use is debatable. Although the Risperdal made you gain weight you should still consider staying on an antipsychotic ~ perhaps one of the weight neutral ones like Abilify or Rexulti.
I'm currently taking Rexulti and lithium with excellent results.
Best wishes and good luck to you! Wildcat
Lamictal works for preventing manic episodes from happening once you're stable from another medication. I would drop the Celexa as SSRI's exacerbate manic symptoms. A possibility would be to add Topamax to the Risperdal to try and avoid weight gain and up your fiber intake. You should be able to get the mania under control in less than 2 weeks then lower the dose as you add Lamictal. Geodon can be used to help with the manic phase but you need an EKG first and I believe it has almost zero weight gain, Abilify can cause weight gain, Seroquel will cause weight gain and severe lethargy the same with Zyprexa, Latuda isn't very good at the manic phase, Saphris might be worth considering, also lithium from what I've seen is about as good at stopping mania as Zyprexa but doesnt haave as much weight gain.
I recommend you just stay on the Risperdal but take it in the AM and start adding Lamictal 25 mgs a day x 1 week then 50 mgs up until you reach a target dose 200-400 mgs. If you need something else at this point I'd go with Lithium and drop the Risperidone and add Latuda for the depression, so if Risperidone doesn't stop it go with Lithium, Lamictal and Latuda I think that combo would work nice for a bipolar sufferer
I know this reply is a little late, but Lamictal can help mania without being combined with another medication, although some may help. Antidepressants make bipolar worse, I'm pretty sure a lot of people will agree with me. I've tried Prozac and Lexapro and Prozac made me go into a state of extreme euphoria then I crashed into a deep depression for about 2 months. Lexapro put me into a full blown manic episode for a week straight, not to mention not only was I manic, but I was completely drained at the time with these horrifying moments of loss of muscle control, as well as my eyes racing back and forth. I've tried Abilify, Risperdal, and Seroquel and although I know these would help me, I didn't continue due to the excessive weight gain, so I'm glad to hear it's helping you so far. In regards to Lamictal, I say you should absolutely take this medication.
Yes, it's considered an anticonvulsant, but it's just as well known for the mood stabilizing effect which has worked very well for me. No medication will cure what we have, we just need to keep trying through trial and error. So far, Lamictal is the only one I've stuck by for 6 years. Highly recommend this medication. Good luck and hope the info helped.
