I was recently put on Lamictal for bipolar depression. I'm only on Lamictal and nothing else. My depression is getting A LOT worse! Is this normal at the beginning?
Lamictal is used to help bi-polar moods and control seizures. It is not an antidepressant. Talk to your doctor about maybe adding an antidepressant.
Do not let your depression escalate, talk to a medical professional as soon as you can.
Hope you get better soon :)
I can tell you based on my experience only that lamictal will not alone alleviate a severe depression. We are all different but I would certainly talk to my psychiatrist about adding an anti-depressant. Good luck!
Hi, kerri! Lamictal is an anti-convulsant which has some properties that help stabilize mood swings but it's not an antidepressant and does not act directly on depression. If it's truly Bipolar depression medications like Latuda might be more effective, with or without Lamictal
Best wishes to you! Wildcat
Lamictal is not an antidepressant. If you are bipolar, it functions as a mood stabilizer. out of the mood stabilizers, it has the best preventive effect on future depressive episodes, not acute or current depression. If indeed your depression is of the bipolar type, stick with the Lamictal. However, it is not enough fequently. There are drugs that should be added if you are suffering. Personally, I would recommend Seroquel or Latuda( if you can afford it. ) Seroquel is made by AstraZeneca. If you meet income eligibility, they will give it to you free. (at least in USA where cost is amazingly high).
I believe I have seen it being used for treatment-resistant depression, but that means only after multiple attempts with regular SSRI's (etc) have failed. If you think of swings at a park where children play, and convert that to moods, when we start out, our moods might wildly swing from one side to the other - maybe with anger, then over to euphoria. The natural state should be balanced in the middle, so the true reason for taking Lamictal is to take that swing at the park and stop it from swinging back and forth high up and down, and make it take itty bitty sways in the breeze. Heh, can you tell I'm a visual thinker?
I can tell you that I do GREAT on Lamictal - it changed my life. However, when we did an attempt with the extended release, I was in danger. Not only did I go through severe depression, but my depression was worse than it had been before, and it was dangerous. I lasted maybe a week, called the doctor, and she told me to not just stop that medication immediately, but GET RID OF IT. Don't even have it in the house with the chance that I might accidentally take it one day unintentionally.
I am bipolar, though I didn't know it at the time. So, understand that this WAS being prescribed to me for depression. We only started to think I was bipolar half a year later when I started going through years of online orders and emails, and I brought evidence to her. We then started an antipsychotic. I am now on an antidepressant, Lamictal, and an antipsychotic. It might seem counterintuitive to be on an antidepressant and be bipolar, but the one I am on (Wellbutrin) is one of the few that seem to be okay for peeps.
I don't know if you ever tried it but prozac weekly works but it won't work if you have screwed around with it in the past it don't turn you into a zombie and you take it once a week its not a bad deal I would look into it and its got no side affects short or long term
