Klonopin - I have been living with somewhat of a social anxiety issue now for almost 12 years?
Added 3 Apr 2015:
discussing much of it with anyone. Tried to visit a shrink once, but I'm generally not a person who likes to open up and talk to people so it didn't work too well for me and i left. Also, i couldn't really afford to pay so much money to sit and talk to someone. Anyhow, as I've gotten older i have been turning more and more to alcohol to calm my nerves in social situations. Problem is, i can't drink everywhere and i hate depending on alcohol. I'm sick of only going out to social events if i could be drunk first in order to not have anxiety and sweat a lot. When I'm drunk, i get very chatty, friendly and just don't care much what others think and I'm in a good place. My anxiety also prevents me from enjoying things in life, such as road trips, flying and even things like being called for Jury Duty would send me in a panic and i feel i would die if i had to show because my anxiety would take over and i would go into a full blown panic attack. Turning 30 next month and i feel like i cant go on like this. I want to live and enjoy life more. I don't want to avoid 90% of social situations because i know my anxiety will take over. So i was thinking i would be opening up and discussing with my Dr on my upcoming check up about possibly starting to take Klonopin, or something else if he recommends. It scares me, but it also scares me living day to day the way i am now. Can people still enjoy a bit of alcohol when on Klonopin? Or if i start taking this, i wont be able to drink anymore? Any other advice/tips/feedback would be awesome from anyone in a similar situation who has been using this medicine. Thank you
I would definitely open up and discuss your anxiety with the doctor. There are many medications such as benzodiazepines like Klonopin or antidepressants like Lexapro or Zoloft that can help with your anxiety. As far as drinking, don't recommend it while on these medications, but a beer now and then isn't going to hurt so relax and address this with the doc.
Drinking is not a good thing if you are on a medication like Klonopin. May I suggest counseling? Cognitive Behavioral therapy done by a therapist can do wonders to help you with social anxiety in conjunction with medication. Opening up about your feelings ia a great step in healing that social anxiety. Exercise is awesome for social anxiety and eat properly and get good sleep!
