I'm almost through my second Mirena (9 years total). I had the same issue with it poking my partner. My doctor cut the string shorter. He had to cut it twice. The last time it was so short he had to put me under to take it out because he had to dig in my uterus to find it and he didn't want to hurt me. I don't know about this one since it's not time to take it out yet. You should ask your doctor to cut the string shorter. My sister had to have the same thing done. She had one put in 2 years ago after her daughter was born. Mirena doesn't keep you from having kids once you take it out. In fact, I've read several things that have said you are actually more fertile the first 3 or 4 months after the Mirena is taken out than you are normally.
As far as the cramps, it takes a few months sometimes. Every month your utirine wall builds up mucus, etc to hold the egg you ovulate. Mirena stops you from building up this wall, which is why periods are usually lighter if you have them at all after a few months on Mirena (I don't have on at all). Sometimes it takes a few months for this wall to get smaller. Until it does, you will probably feel it moving around. Once it comes out, that wall builds up again. I still occasionally feel it during intercourse or if i'm constipated. But it's not nearly as bad as when it was first put in. If in a month or two it is still uncomfortable I would let your doctor know. Or tell him/her when you go in to get the string cut. Cutting the string only takes a few minutes so you should be able to get an apt pretty quickly.
I hope this helps! Good luck!
