I would like to know what pain meds are ok with my issues, I'm 40 and quit everything, MELD score of 13, not on a list yet, but I was wondering, with varicees in my esophogous, is it standard procedure to give hydromorphone to a patient, then cut me off cold turkey, I'm diagnosed as terminal by the way, I thought the doc should help me be comfortable, and not throw up? I have been going through this circle of docs, I am at wits end, and still am in pain, any thoughts???
Oh sweetie, my heart sure goes out to you. I highly doubt it's normal procedure to cut you off cold turkey from your meds. As far as pain meds, they have very good ones available as suppositories. They also have good meds for being nauseous. Are the pain meds doing that? If so, please ask about the suppositories. If you're nauseous anyway, I think ativan helps with that. I may be wrong on that. Also, OTC meds for upset stomachs may work. The names are eluding me right now. I have my mind on a dear friend who is in much pain. I'm switching between tabs so please forgive me. Please stay strong. Fight for your right to be pain free. That's what I'm helping my friend with so I can only imagine how you must be feeling. My heart and prayers are with you.
Wish I had a good, accurate answer to your question, but I'm afraid I don't. i did want to say that it is cruel and ridiculous to cut your off of pain meds.
I think I would research and/or ask the doctors which pain meds are the least harmful to the liver and the choices of delivery for them. There are a lot pain medications, many of which do not have Tylenol (very hard on the liver) in them. Are pain patches a possibility?
I hope you find some help soon. You deserve to be as pain-free as possible. It is your right.
You have a MELD score of 13 and 15 is the magic number for transplant. You must have other problems that are causing you pain. You need to address that. With the varices, I regularly have (say every 4 months) an endoscopy and they tie, cauterize and I have not had a bleed thank God in 4 years. I was having them every month (I'm talking Air Vac'ing me to the hospital. Why do they say you are terminal and then give you a MELD score? Have you cancer anywhere? No one has given me anything for the varicees except Nausea meds to prevent me from throwing up. You need to look up "Top Docs" for Gastroenterology and find a specialist in that area. Washington Hospital Center has a excellent record and so does VMC in Richmond, VA. Dr. Mitch Shifman has been in the news, tv and he's smart. I am praying for you and you should too. Ask for Guidance and see what happens. It's not over. You are young and alot of different opinions can scare you and wear you down. Be your own researcher and start talking TO THEM.
