... Mitral valve. I almost died from the infection. I'm sick of taking Coumadin every night, 4mg - 2mg On Wednesdays. I have a PT/INR drawn every 2 weeks and my range is 2.5-3.5 INR. It is a bad drug that has almost killed me twice. I have no choice, the only times I do off it is for surgery. Then I use Lovenox. I am really having a hard time with this, and I need help, support, moral support. I feel like I'm going to lose my mind. I need someone to talk to besides the doctors. I need help
Hang in there! If you have a mechanical valve you need the blood thinner to prevent throwing a clot. If you stop your medication and have a bad stroke you live through, I think it would be a whole lot worse to live inside a body that is half paralysed when your mind is not affected. Or knowing what you want to say but having it come out completely different. I know it is a hardship to have to take pills everyday and be mindful of what you eat but if you consider the alternative of living inside a stroke ravaged body then maybe it is not so bad!
I have a mechanical aortic valve and have been on coumadin since July 2005. My INR is also 2.5-3.5. I have a home testing monitor that I use weekly to test the blood. My opinion ever since my surgery is that it's a relatively small price to pay for me. Not that coumadin is without risks. I was 33 when I had surgery to replace a shot aortic valve and also remove a large aortic aneurysm. I chose the mechanical valve route to avoid future surgeries to replace pig valves that wear out after 10 years or so. And, as you know, with mechanical valves comes the coumadin to prevent clotting. Anyway, I understand what you're going through. Hang in there though and don't get discouraged.
your case is same as mine
i had aortic valve replacement (i was almost dead that time )in 2000 and since that time im on warfirine 5.5 mg daily and having monthly blood tests
i feel im lucky that im alive now
Taking the blood thinner daily is nothing comparing with suffering from heart failure
forget about having those tabs and consider it as regular habite just like brushing your teeth daily
i think you need to relax and stop being upset since it is very minor issue to worry about
always remember most of the ppl around you are having daily medication , no one is completely healthy afet 30 :) and thanks god there is a medication that can let you live healthy
enjoy being ALIVE
Hi norm! I feel ya been on coumadin for 2years now pain in the butt, but gotta do it,keep ya head up I know it make you feel like your an outsider but we are all blessed to still be here, you just need a listening ear who know what it feels like day to day. We all have good and bad days sometimes the bad outweigh the good ones but keep the faith, and stay prayed-up.
Hang in there. Don't let the drugs get you down.
If you don't like the Coumadin talk to your hematologist and cardiologist about switching permanently to Arixtra or Lovenox. You are taking Lovenox when you get close to surgery so there is no reason why you cannot use it long term. I am. There is a possible bone density issue with long term use of Lovenox so Arixtra would be the way to go for the very long term. Good luck and best wishes.
