Methadones over 3yrs now take atleast 70 or 80 milgs a day. This has ruined my life and I've got a 2 yr old I luv dearly! Recently seen a doctor who put me on 1 suboxon strip a day it didn't phase my pain so I gave up. Wonderin if I should try this again from what I heard I should've gotten atleast 2 strips a day. Or does suboxon just not help at all? I need a help fast please!!!
Dear Storm, Welcome, the switch from methadone to subutex is being done wrong by professionals all over the place and yours was done wrong, completely wrong if what you say here is accurate. A methadone patient should be switched to subutex and in a very very specific way. #1, they should be on 30 mgs or less per day #2 should stay off of methadone for at least 72 hours before starting subutex and#3 should be warned this med is for getting off opiates first, but does have some pain relieving qualities, not everyone thinks it addresses their pain better than methadone. People switching from heroin, methadone and long acting opiates have more of an adjustment phase, it can last a few weeks. The reason the switch to subutex from methadone has to be done correctly is a condition called precipitated withdrawal will set in more frequently with methadone patients, than short acting opiate patients. Long acting opiates or opiate replacements ( methadone, subutex, suboxone) both require all other opiate based meds or opiate replacement meds to be off the brain receptor sites COMPLETELY or the 2 meds will both fight to the death, so to speak, to sit on the brain receptor site, therefore precipitating ( or dropping) both meds off the site and preventing either from being able to seat. This results in horrible withdrawal, much worse than regular withdrawal and all you can do is wait it out, until they both recede, before attempting to take either med again. Many methadone patients do need more than 1 strip at first, but the induction HAS to be done correctly. I am sorry you were not handled well where you were inducted, it will still be a matter of whether you feel it handles your pain better, if you had been inducted right, it may have given you more relief, I don't know.
