Is ultram an opiate or a narcotic?

Ultram is neither of the two, it is a synthetic drug used for chronic pain. Works quite well for most people.

I forgot to mention that Ultram is also non-addicting. Which is one of the amenities of it's use for chronic pain

Ultram is not an opiate, its chemical structure is different from opiate, however its analgesic effects are is close or narcotic analgetics. Like other opiate pain killer it may cause addiction

Yes, after I posted what I was told by my doctor, I read up on it.
I was surprised to find that there is a warning about, "Possible addiction." I tried it many years ago and hated it's side effects! So, consequently, I had no fear of getting hooked on it. Still not sure why my, "Doc." told me the wrong info. Good for you and checking on the postings. :)
