my son is 8 he has been taking concerta about a 1 yr and he has been doing much much better in school and around other kids. But I want to know if when he is older can he stop taking this medication ? I want for him to try without haveing to take this medication. will it get any better or worse after time ?
Sometimes as children get older they can come off these meds. My oldest son was on Methylin ER and he stopped taking it in his high school years and his grades did drop some but he managed. My other son was the really severe ADHD and for a long time I couldnt let him go at all without meds but once he reached the teen aged years we were able to take him off meds on the weekends and over summer break. I have given him a choice of trying school without meds but he knows his focus is just not there so he chooses to continue the medicine during the school years so far. I think it is an accomplishment to be able to go off during the summers now and my hopes are that one day he can go without it completely but if he cant, he cant.
