My girlfriend and I just found out that she is pregnent and she had been on suboxone for the last 4 months. She started out on 8mg a day and has slowly reduced herself to 2-4mg a day. But come today we find out that she is pregnent and we realizing that she has been taking the lower doses for the first month on the pregnancy. Is there any possibile side effects that we should be worried about and what are some preventative measures we should take to ensure everything to be o.k?
Suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone) is a prescription medication used to treat opioid dependence. This medication may not be safe for use during pregnancy, although the full risks are still unknown. However, it may be safer than continued use of other opioids, especially illegal ones, although methadone is usually the preferred drug in this situation.
You need to talk with your healthcare provider. He or she will consider the benefits and risks of Suboxone before making a recommendation in your particular situation. All the best.
