I asked a similar question a couple weeks ago and never got an answer. What do people take for moderate to severe pain if they are allergic to codeine (all forms)? My mother was a very active 80 plus woman who now has some debilitating pain. Her doctors keep telling her she can take codeine if she takes nexium so she won't have stomach upset. I keep telling her to go to a pain management dr. and explain the problem to him/her. But she's nervous and is from the generation that the doc is ALWAYS right. Anyway, I need you special people to help my mom. You guys are great, thanks! Sweetpea
Is there anyone out there who has severe back pain, but is allergic to codeine?

PS I would take my mother to her doctors so they would have to listen to her, but I just moved 3 states away! I'll probably end up taking her anyway!
If you can't go to the doctor with her PLEASE send a note along with her and explain that under no circumstances is he/she to prescribe Codeine to you Mother as it makes her violently ill... My Mother is also not able to take Codeine and since there are so many other meds out there I am sure the doctor can find an alternative and not insist that she take a med that she has made clear makes her ill. Is he/she trying to kill her? Does he/she not trust that your Mom does not know her own history? Even if she isn't completely lucid (and I am not saying that she isn't, I don't know her obviously) wouldn't be better to air on the side of safety and give her something else and not insist she take something she has made clear that she does not want to take? What is the matter with that fool? There are so many medications to treat pain that I am sure that the doctor can findmedication and if he/she can't find another drug than find your Mom another doctor!!! Good luck to you and your Mom and finding some relief!!! Valerie
Have you tried Ultram or Ultram with Tylenol? The Ultram with Tylenol, which I think the generic name is Tramadol with APAP??? Worked great for me before I broke my neck and started having all the other problems I have now. It dosen't work for everyone... but I'm allergic to codiene also, but thankfully I can take the synthetics for some reason... hope you find an answer... I can't just take anything either. Good Luck!
