currently taking 60mg MsContin 3x's day due to pain from surgery, radiation, and chronic cancer pain. I dont want to take fentanyl patch, but the mcontin is no longer working. just looking for advice on what else is availble before i see my doctors. Thanks!
Different people react differently with the same drug.So there really isn't an answer to your question. But there are things that you should be doing I think.
How long have you been on the same med and strength? If this drug worked for you for awhile and now isn't giving you the same relief you may have built up some tolerance and will need to adjust the strength. Are you taking anything for break-thru pain? If not you should ask your doc about that. Generally you would want to use the same formula for the break-thru so I would guess you would want to be using MSIR (morphine instant release).
Some people do get better results with one compund over another. One that I have found to work well for me is Opana. Thats an oxymorphone. Oxycontin is another name for oxycodone and on and on and on
I think in terms of most used it would probably be oxycontin. M.S. Contin and Opana for long term chronic pain treatment extended release type medicine. Becdause I don't know how long you have been taking meds for chronic pain I don'yt want to delve much deeper. I would hope mthat you are in a pain management program, one that includes excersize (from walking if you can to bending your elbow(preferably without a drink attached LOL) to whatever you can do. It should also include some self hypnosis and guided imagery courses. If you reley totally on the pain meds to get you thru the day you will , IMHO end up taking more than you need to and take a chance of being snowed all day.
Good luck and let us know how things turn out
Do you have a reason why you do not want to be on the fentanyl patch? I switched to the patch two months ago from taking Norco 10 and I am very happy with it. It is an even, level, constant medication, and I do have Norco for breakthrough. I am so happy to be free of the highs and lows that taking more Norco gave me. I tried MScontin time release but I just slept all the time.
Good luck to you! Hugs for the pain you live with. You are among friends.
Yeah im wondering the same thign meg is; why dont you want to be put on the patch? or you could even get those saweeet lollipops, haha. And i also agree with some of the other posts; you should be on breakthrough medication as we.
(i dunno how much you know about pharmacology) But there are more than just opioids to manage pain. They care called neuropathic pain relievers. They are used to treat things that have to do with nerve diseases (such as fibromyalgia) nerve damage ( like if you were to break your arm near your elbows' 'funny-bone' and damage all the nerves in your arm) and nerve problems like pinched nerves on the neck/ back etc.
I am on one called gabapentin. There are others bu that one works great for me. Look into Lyrica, you may have seen comercials on TV about it before, its a fairly new drug.
You might want to try methadone. It works pretty well. I tried opana and morphine and they did nothing for me so I went back on the methadone. There are some issues going from one to the other of these medicines but I am on 140mg a day of methadone and it helps enough that I can function as a person and it doesn't get you drowsy or "dumb".
I took Fentanyl for 11 yrs, becuse of RSD and
Fibromyalgia. I was very hapy taking the Fentanyl. I was on 50 mcg and changed my patch ever 48 hrs. most times at night right before I went to bed. Do hope you have good luck. I must come off now becuase of insurance issues, they will no longer cover patches unless I pay a very high deductible, so I'll be doing what I got to do with my Dr. I guess.
I wear my patch on my upper arm area, and when I take a shower, I just make sure I don't rub over it with soap, my wash cloth, or my towel. I found out that the Mylan patches didn't work for me at all, and they always feel off even before the 48 hrs to change them. The only other time I would have issues with the patch was during the summer time and sweating and so forth with it on, and sometimes they would come loose, so I had to resort to the taping of it on.
I have been taking Watson brand now for over 5 yrs., and they work well for me, they do contain the pocket of medication, but I have never had them leak beyond the patch. Occasionally I will get a strong alcohol smell when I first take them off, but it's always confined to just the patch area. I was on Duragesic Brand before Watson, but had to change due to insurance coverage and them paying for the brand and and had to go to generic. I was lucky that the Watson brand worked very well for me all those yrs.One thing with the patches there haven't been any of the highs and lows for me, and most of the time, I used very little break through medications.
Hope things go well with you.
