Is it safe to take a prescription that is old, like a year old?

my boyfriend has thrown his back out and has some old pain medicine, I told him not to take it until we found out if it was safe to. he's not used to taking pain medicine.
most medications are good for 1year. if u look at the bottle it should say expires and date. if its been kept in a dry dark place at room temp it still could be ok to use. at worse case it will just not work. i've found perks a year latter and they were fine.
It should be fine to take it but just to be safe, call the pharmacy. I don't know what type of medication it is or if his health conditions have changed since he got that script. Better to be safe than sorry. kimmie1
