hi i have been taking ritalin 10 mg for narcolepsy for 15 years have been driving all this time but now it has been questioned.can any tell me if it is safe or not
Ritalin (methylphenidate hydrochloride) is one of the drugs that cautions against performing activities that require mental alertness like driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the drug will affect you. In many instances, people diagnosed with Narcolepsy are cautioned against driving because of the nature of the disorder. If it has been questioned about your abilities to drive, you should be evaluated by your Dr to determine if you are safe to drive. There are forms that can be filled out and submitted to DMV that give medical clearance to drive. It depends on the laws in your state but for your own liability, you might want to seek medical clearance to drive. Having narcolepsy and taking Ritalin while driving could open you up to a major lawsuit if you were ever in a motor vehicle accident that injured someone and it was your fault. A lawyer would jump on your medical history like a dog after a bone!! If it were me, I would be sure I had written evidence of medical clearance to drive. Talk to your Dr about it and see what he says.
