Hi all, about a week and a half ago I started taking xanax. For two days in a row, I took 0.5mg each day, then the third day I stopped, the fourth day I had a panic attack and took 1 mg. The fifth day was 0.5, the 6th day was 1mg, the 7th day 1 mg, the 8th day 1 mg, the 9th day 1.25 mg, the 10th day nothing, then I felt sick the 11th day and took .5 mg. So I've been taking it for a total of 9 days... is it safe for me to go cold turkey? I'm feeling incredibly anxious because I broke up with my boyfriend of 10 years and life has just all around been stressful... please let me knwo?
Yes it's safe. You will most likely still have your anxiety because of your stressful situation but the only time it's dangerous to just stop Xanax cold Turkey is if u have been on it for a very long time because it can throw your body into shock and even cause seizures. Sorry to hear about your situation. Best wishes
It is safe to stop but you prob will have rebound anxiety and maybe insomnia. You will have to basically tolerate that. My suggestion, other than the xanax, is to get on an anti-depressant (notably Lexapro) to deal with your panic and anxiety. Xanax is short acting and highly addictive whereas the anti-dep is better long-term. A doc can prescribe a benzodiazapam for two weeks till the anti-dep kicks in. In the end you will feel so much more balanced being on the anti-dep. I say Lexapro because it is a 'restful' med versus a wakeful one such as Paxil. And thus it is better for use with high anxiety and panic. :-)
Sounds like your short term low dose would make it possible to stop now. I would suggest you get rid of your remaining xanax. It sounds like you are relying on it to help you through your stressful situation. You are playing it smart to stop now before you get into higher doses. Believe me xanax is hard to quit if you wait too long. Best of luck and thanks for your post. (KK)
