She has osteoarthritis, bilateral knee replacements, left hip replacement, osteoporosis, one episode of congestive heart failure, urinary incontinence, a stroke six months ago, recent TIA's, and a place in her brain that may culminate into another stroke. She has some depression and I'm wonering if Prozac is the best choice.
Fluoxetine is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
It is probably a good first choice for your mother.
SSRIs are generally better tolerated than other antidepressants and are equally as effective.
Other antidepressants may not be suitable given her patient history - eg. the older tricyclic antidepressants may have an effect on her heart condition.
