After radioactive iodine treatment to treat overactive thyroid in Nov. 2010 I was put onto thyroxine 2 months ago as my thyroid levels were normal. I have now developed severe panic attacks and insomnia which nothing seems to releave. Valium 5mg was diagnosed with little effect. I am so frightened about going onto an antidepressant tablet.
Don't be frightened just get educated. Antidepressants come in several categories the newest of which are the SSRI's and the SNRI's which stand for serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin/ norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors respectively. Cymbalta is a SNRI prescribed for depression and nerve pain relief. Many of the SSRI's like Paxil and Zoloft are prescribed for depression and anxiety related conditions. I would consider an SSRI first before resorting to an SNRI for the panic attacks and mild depression. You can have your doctor explain the different types of antidepressants and how they work, then make an educated decision to try an antidepressant to see if this alleviates your symptoms.
