IBS can have different manifestations. Sometimes it is primarily a chronic constipation, sometimes it is a chronic diarrhea and the common form is alternating between diarrhea and constipation. Gastroenteritis is infectious diarrhea with inflammation of the bowel, small intestine and stomach (he probably viewed this on your scope) and usually results in some combination of diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain and cramping. It is also known as the "stomach flu" or a "stomach bug". In adults, norovirus and Campylobacter are the more common causes. Less common causes include other bacteria (or their toxins) and parasites or it can be caused by non bacterial or viral causes like heavy use of NSAIDS (stomach inflammation) or Chrohn's disease. Transmission may occur due to consumption of improperly prepared foods or contaminated water or via close contact with individuals who are infectious. IBS, on the other hand, is not infectious. It is a chronic condition. It doesnt usually involve vomiting. It also doesnt involve any inflammation. They dont know for sure what causes it but it is more common in women. It is usually managed by diet, stress reduction and other lifestyle changes. It is possible that you may have all of it. Your meds are typical meds used for these kinds of conditions. You might want to add a fiber supplement like Benefiber, Citrucel, etc. Fiber supplements can help bulk stools to prevent loose stools but also works to keep you from being constipated so fiber helps keep a balance so there is neither constipation or diarrhea. You might also try a probiotic like Culturelle to help give you beneficial bacteria in the gut. Sometimes medications and diarrhea can cause the balance in the gut to be off. We need beneficial bacteria in our digestive system to keep bad bacteria in check. If there gets to be an overgrowth of bad bacteria, we get things like gastroenteritis and diarrhea. Probiotics, like Culturelle can give you a good supply of good bacteria so your gut can balance itself again. Much of our immune system relies on this beneficial bacteria in our gut so Probiotics are very good for you!
