I have been off HYDROCODONES for 24hrs and am withdrawing pretty good. I know take 2mg at a time every 2 hrs til my symptoms reside, but how many mg is normal, 4mg?24mg? I have no clue. Also, how often do I take this dose ? Once a day? Twice a day? HELP ME QUICK... I starting In just a couple hrs..
When you are first stopping other opioids and starting treatment with a
buprenorphine product, a doc will usually prescribe Subutex (a similar medication that does not contain naloxone), rather than Suboxone. Using Suboxone in this situation is likely to cause severe opioid withdrawal symptoms.
The doc will individualize your dosage of Subutex, based largely on how you respond to the medication. Typically, Subutex is started at least four hours after your last dose of other opioids, preferably after withdrawal symptoms start to appear. If you take this medicine too soon, it might actually worsen withdrawal symptoms.
Often, by the third day you can be switched to Suboxone. This drug is typically a good option for use outside of a treatment center, as it is less likely to be abused. Because the naloxone component of the drug essentially has no effect when Suboxone is used as directed, you can be switched to exactly the same dose, based on the buprenorphine content. For instance, if you were using 8 mg of Subutex, you can be switched to Suboxone 8 mg/2 mg, which contains 8 mg of buprenorphine and 2 mg of naloxone.
The doc should adjust your dosage until you find an amount that adequately reduces your withdrawal symptoms. For most people, this daily dosage is usually between 4 mg and 24 mg of the buprenorphine content.
Suboxone lasts long enough that you can use it just once a day. It has a half-life of 24 to 42 hours (based on the buprenorphine content), meaning that it takes 24 to 42 hours for the level of buprenorphine to drop by 50% in the blood. This means it may take several days, or even a week or longer, to be mostly out of your system.
Please do seek then advice of your doc who prescribed the med also for more accurate info.
Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with Suboxone include the following:
This medication comes in the form of a tablet or film. Both are dissolved on the floor of the mouth under the tongue. It is usually taken once a day.
Do not chew, swallow, or suck on the tablets or film, as this will reduce the effectiveness of the drug. Keep them under your tongue until they completely dissolve.
If you are using more than one tablet, spread them out under the tongue. Do not place them on top of one another. If you use more than two tablets per dose and cannot fit them all in your mouth at once, take them separately. No matter what, make sure to keep them under your tongue until they dissolve completely.
For the films, place no more than two films under the tongue at one time. Drink a little water before using the film, as this moistens the mouth and helps the film dissolve easier.
For the medication to work properly, it must be used as prescribed. Do not increase your dosage or suddenly stop using this medication without the docs advice and or approvals.
Take care, be safe & well, best wishes!
dear Trinity, no judgment, are you not using a subs dr for this, with subs, less is better. So the 2 mg til symptoms subside is a pretty good formula, honestly, the subs takes about 2 full hours to reach full effect. Most people need no more than 4 mgs per day, and you can take it all at once or id you are just starting and need more, take twice a day, no later than 3 pm for second dose.
Trinity... DO listen to pattishay... she is the best to help with sub dosing, etc. Listen to her and do what she suggests. And, if you have not gotten one, Do get a sub doc... good luck. I am finishing my first week on suboxone strips 2 mg twice a day and doing very well. I don' have cravings or withdrawal symptoms. I couldn't have done this without the support of this wonderful group...
So... keep listening to patti and keep posting to let us know how you are doing... good luck...
My personal experience is that 2mgs once per day is adequate. I have a friend who was taking 4 or 5 8mgs strips per day. I introduced him to this site and he now takes just 1 8mgs strip once per day. He feels no different. I should think you and your DR will find out what you comfort level will be very soon. Patti was my coach when I started and I listened to her even though I was skeptical. I am very happy I did. I hope by now your taking the subs and are feeling better. You have come to a very supportive place and you will find a caring, supportive and very knowledgeable group of people. None of us claim to be Md's but what you do get is personal experience. It has been one of my better decisions. I hope you find it to be for you as well.
All ym best to you
