You need to take alcohol out of the mix right away. It can make insomnia worse. You should talk to your dr, get on something not a benzo for anxiety, then wean off this other stuff. Trying to get off it when there is nothing else to stop the anxiety is double rough, because when you start with the anxiety you want to take the med. There is a medication called buspar that you take daily to prevent anxiety. Also antidepressants can help stop it.
Hi step one is to try to quit drinking. When you drink alcohol you don't have a proper night sleep. You 'pass out' rather than fall asleep naturally and don't reach an REM cycle so you may spend 8 hours in bed (for example) but you are not actually getting very much sleep. It also causes depression and anxiety, and will interrupt the way psychotropic medications work. Can you speak to your doctor about getting help with stopping drinking? He/she could refer you to a drug & alcohol service to give you advice & support about how to best go about it... Xanax probably isn't the best medication choice for you, and it is a benzodiazepine, which can be highly addictive. After you have fought your first battle, speak with your doctor about maybe swapping to an SSRI, such as Citalopram. You can continue taking this with the Ambien if you so wish. Wishing you luck & best wishes!
