... and I take 10 mg daily of prednisone for RA and lupus. I am getting ready to have the vaccine
Hello Deborah. I had sent a response but it got lost, just in case you receive two. The answer is not a good idea, risky.
I have been advised by my Rheumy to not take this vaccine as it contains a live vaccine. When immunosuppressed you will not fight the virus and can get a full blown case of shingles, possibly severe. Your other diseases mixed with prednisone gives little room for another attack. Your dose may be seen as low. However anyone on ten mg has suppressed their immune system and you may end up with shingles now.
I have shingles and have tapered prednisone to fifteen from sixty mg. my system is suppressed and I was told by the Rheumy, GP and Pulmonologist to not get the vaccine. Shingles appeared a month ago, anyway. Two rounds of rash moderate to severe and not done yet. Extremely mind bending pain. Hospitalized for a number of days. And a night in the ER two days later.
Please do reading on the vaccine to understand more. Three or four months after you completely stop the prednisone you should be safe to receive the vaccine providing you are not taking other immunosuppression. If you have been on the prednisone for a number of months, the doctor can calculate.
Good luck and hope you do well. Karen
Deborah. Just remember that you "might"get shingles. With a live vaccine you will increase the probability to A very high rate. I took a chance, but this has been eight years on prednisone. Remember you can get it later once you are off the prednisone. I surely was not going to guarantee getting it.
Choose wisely. :-). Karen
