my hdl count is 34.
Diet, exercise, and some medicine. The best medicine is niacin for the improvement of HDL, but statins are probably better overall.
A few points however:
1) nothing will raise it fast. This process takes time for it to work. Typically 6 to 8 weeks to begin to see benefit. This because the body has to produce the HDL and then maintain it.
2) they is no benefit to raising it very fast. HDL helps prevent long term complications. Bringing it up is unlikely to have any benefit immediately.
3) the recent trial AIM-HIGH brings in to question the use of niacin to raise HDL. Though it brings the number up higher, we don't see a morality benefit. We have known that low HDL increases your risk, but increasing the number might not be the answer. Statins increase HDL, a little less than niacin, but they have many other benefits.
