Mother is 69years old and has been suffering from severe insomnia for over 30years. Md said she was not suffering from dipression
Imipramine is used to treat, amongst other things, the symptoms of depression. Insomnia is a symptom of depression. Your doctor may feel that it is appropriate to try Imipramine given how long she has suffered from insomnia. If you are not comfortable with this you could seek a second opinion.
Chronic Insomnia is not necessarily a sign of depression. It can have many other sources or may be just that a person has insomnia.
Meds for depression are often given to a person with chronic insomnia as many of them have a sedating effect. I was given another tricyclic antidepressant that worked well for my chronic insomnia for years that worked very well.
Just keep an eye on her for other adverse side effects and make sure she is careful for the first few weeks until she gets used to the med.

I would think that amitriptyline would be the best medication for your mother's insomnia, but I'm no doctor. Amitriptyline is prescribed often for insomnia, it's also known as Elavil and it is also an antidepressant, but it's not used as an antidepressant very often anymore, it's just used for insomnia.
