I'm considering trying Wellbutrin for my depression, which is severe. I also have severe anxiety. My daughter did very well on this med and recommended that I try it. I've been on so many antidepressants and want to give Wellbutrin a try. Can I take an anti anxiety med with Wellbutrin? Something like Klonopin. I don't have high blood pressure but this is a concern of mine since this med is stimulating. Have any of you started on a very low dose like 75mgs? Thank you.
The only way to know for sure if it helps with your depression is to have your doctor prescribe it. I have both depression and anxiety that has run in my family. Different meds work best for different people a d you just have to make adjustments in dosage or meds to did the right one that works for you. You might want to also talk with your doctor about strictly an SSRI like zoloft or lexapro. This is used to treat both depression and anxiety. I started off on wellbutrin and zoloft which worked well and then other things came into play that I had to stop the wellbutrin because of an interaction with another med I had to start taking for adult ADD. I see a psychiatrist who has me on lexapro and klonopin for awhile and the depression and anxiety are in control. It's really all about finding the one that works best in treating the condition with the least side affects. I would do some research on drugs.com and then consult with your doctor about options.
Explain what the most frequent and severe symptoms are and that will help your MD determine a good medication to start you on.
My opinion is wellbutrin is a wonderful medication. However it lowers the threshold for seizures. This medication worked for me and then i had 5 seizures in 2 weeks and i can longer take it. The key is not to take it with other drugs that lower the threshold for seizures, like xanax for example. Also the higher the dose the more chance for seizure. never go above 450mg even 300mg is high, that s waht i was on. Except for this concern the medication is wonderful and being a ndri (norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake) there's nothing else like it at this point, not in the us anyway. by the way it does not affect serotonin levels. Work with your doctor on this very carefully. By the way monitor your response to the med closely as it does have a mild stimulating efect which could increase your anxiety (this only happens to some people though)
The only thing that worries me about Wellbutrin is your severe anxiety - Wellbutrin as an alerting drug can make it worse. I only have had mild anxiety mainly stemming from my depression. I am on Wellbutrin XL 150 mg, but at 300 mg I was more irritable and impatient. I feel more like myself at 150 mg. I would say it's worth giving a shot, talk to your psychiatrist about it. I was on Klonopin for 3 months, I took Wellbutrin in the morning and Klonopin to take at night and it was a good combination. Unfortunately, I was one of those 1% to gain weight on Klonopin so I stopped taking it - but mentally that combination did have good effects on me. I took 0.25 mg of Klonopin at night (halved the lowest dosage of 0.5 mg using a pill breaker). If your psychiatrist doesn't recommend such a combination and recommends some other anti-depressant that would be better for anxiety, go ahead with it. Good luck!
